| Machinability
| In terms of machinability, stainless steel 317 is tougher compared to SS316. · Chip breakers are recommended to be used · Hardenability can be reduced · Low speeds and constant feeds can also be used |
| Welding | Stainless steel 317 can be welded through different methods such as resistance and fusions. However, it is not recommended to use oxyacetylene welding method. Different filler metals such as 317L or AWS E/ER317 can used to achieve the best welding result. |
| Hot Working | All common hot working procedures are suitable to be used for stainless steel 317. In this process, the SS317 is heated at 1149 up to 1260⁰C. In order to retain the material’s corrosion resistance property, post-work annealing process is required. |
| Cold Working | Different cold working process such as heading, drawing, shearing, and stamping are suitable for stainless steel 317 grade. In order to reduce the material’s internal stress, post-work annealing is also necessary. |
| Annealing | The stainless steel 317 is annealed at a specific temperature ranging from 1010 up to 1121⁰C. This process is followed by cooling. |
