409 Stainless Steel Sheet
409 Stainless Steel Sheet Supplier in China
Grade 409 is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel containing approximately 11% chromium. It is widely used in applications where oxidation and corrosion resistance is required beyond the capability of carbon steel or coated steels. While 409 offers good oxidation resistance and excellent formability, its corrosion resistance is lower compared with grades such as 304, 430, or 439. Nevertheless, it provides significantly better durability than mild carbon steel.
This grade can be readily formed by roll forming, stretch bending, deep drawing, or pressing. In the annealed condition, 409 does not harden during cold working with mild forming processes such as pressing or stretch bending. Its weldability is considered fair; however, it should not be employed in impact-loaded structures. In the heat-affected zones of welds, grain growth may occur, which can negatively affect mechanical properties.
Due to its balance of performance and cost, Grade 409 is most commonly used in the automotive industry, particularly for tubing and stamped components in exhaust system applications.

RESISTANCE LEVEL
RESISTANCE TO HEAT:
In general, it is resistive to scaling in interrupted service up to 1499oF (815oC) and continuous service up to 1247oF (675oC).
RESISTANCE TO CORROSION:
It is resistant to atmospheric and exhaust gas corrosion.
In most environments, a light surface rust forms, which prevents further corrosion but makes the surface less desirable.

WELDABILITY

- Readily weldable
- Pre-heat of 302 to 500oF (150 to 260oC) is advised
- When welding narrow pieces, no post-weld annealing is necessary
- Post-weld annealing at temperatures ranging from 1400 to 1499oF increased weld ductility
- Typically, automotive exhaust tubing is welded without the use of filler metal
